Established in 1843, University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago is the oldest medical school in the state. It was founded by a group of physicians and citizens interested in creating a medical school that would bring scientific and educational opportunities to the city. In its early years, the college was located on Randolph Street and offered a two-year program for students who had completed their university studies. The college quickly gained recognition for its high standards and emphasis on research. By 1857, it had become the first medical school west of the Mississippi River to receive a charter from the state legislature.
In 1899, University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago moved to its current location on Harrison Street. This move allowed for increased enrollment due to better accommodations, as well as access to more resources such as laboratories and libraries. In 1906, it became part of the newly formed University of Illinois system, which included three other medical schools across the state. Since then, UICOMC has grown into one of the top medical schools in the United States with over 1,000 faculty members and 4,000 students enrolled each year. The college has established many firsts throughout its history including being one of the first medical schools in America to introduce an electronic health records system and being one of only seven American universities awarded grants from NIH’s Clinical Research Center Program in 1974.

The University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago is one of the top medical schools in the nation. The school has an acceptance rate of 4.2%, making it highly competitive. In the 2019-2020 admissions cycle, there were 5,977 applications and only 250 spots available. Of those who applied, 2,790 were accepted and matriculated into the program.
