The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine was founded in 1870, becoming the first medical school in Iowa. It was established by Dr. Nathan Smith Davis, a nationally known leader in medical education and the founder of the American Medical Association. The College was originally located on the east side of the Iowa River, but moved to its current location on the west side in 1918.
The University’s medical school has grown tremendously since its founding, and now offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs as well as research opportunities. In addition to traditional MD degrees, students can now pursue PhDs in biomedical sciences and Doctorates of Medicine (MD/PhD) degrees. The College also offers specialized training programs such as a Physician Scientist Training Program (PSTP), which provides students with an integrated program combining clinical experience with research training. The College is also home to many research centers, including the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS), which focuses on accelerating scientific discovery from laboratory bench to bedside through innovative partnerships between academic researchers, clinicians, and community partners.
