Southern Illinois University, Springfield School of Medicine

Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (SIU SOM) was founded in 1970. It is the only medical school in the state of Illinois that is located outside of Chicago, and is the second largest medical school in the state. SIU SOM has been a leader in medical education and research since its inception. In addition to teaching students from all over the world, SIU SOM has been instrumental in creating new treatments and technologies that have had an impact on healthcare around the world. The school has also been a leader in developing innovative programs to address public health needs in Illinois and beyond. One such program, Project Access, was created to provide access to health care for underserved populations throughout central and southern Illinois. This program has provided more than 11 million patient visits since its inception and continues to grow each year. Additionally, SIU SOM partners with other organizations to provide resources and training for clinicians who serve rural communities.
