The University of Oklahoma College of Medicine was established in 1900. It was the first public medical school in the state and one of the first accredited medical schools in the southwest. The college was founded by a group of local physicians who wanted to provide medical education to young people in Oklahoma. In its early days, the college had a two-year medical curriculum, and students were admitted from across the region. Over time, it grew and developed into a four-year program that offered specializations like pediatrics and surgery.

The University of Oklahoma College of Medicine (OUCOM) is one of the top medical schools in the nation. The school has a long history of excellence and has consistently ranked among the top medical schools in the country. In 2019, OUCOM had a total enrollment of 854 students. The student body is composed of students from all over the world, representing over 40 countries. Of those enrolled, 58% were female and 42% were male.
