The University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine was founded in 1765 as the first medical school in the United States. It was established by a group of physicians and surgeons from Philadelphia, who had been trained in Europe. The school’s mission was to provide quality medical education for the citizens of Philadelphia and beyond. In 1791, it became part of the University of Pennsylvania and continued to develop as one of the foremost medical schools in the nation. In 1804, it began offering postgraduate courses, and by 1868, it had become known as one of the most prestigious medical schools in the world. It has since grown to become one of the largest medical schools in America with over 4,000 students enrolled annually.
