The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (UPSOM) has a long and distinguished history. Founded in 1883, UPSOM was the first medical school in the United States to accept female students. During its early years, the school was located in downtown Pittsburgh and was part of the University of Pittsburgh’s medical department. In 1908, UPSOM relocated to Oakland, where it remains today. Throughout its history, UPSOM has been dedicated to providing students with a rigorous education and preparing them for successful careers in medicine. The curriculum emphasizes evidence-based practice, interdisciplinary research, and community involvement. Over the years, UPSOM has grown and now includes seven departments: Pathology; Anesthesiology; Biomedical Informatics; Epidemiology; Family Medicine; Neurology; and Psychiatry. Additionally, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) provides clinical services to patients at several locations throughout western Pennsylvania. We are an AMCAS school. All applicants may complete the secondary application. We admit on a rolling basis. PA residency has minimal effect on admission. Our committee seeks to admit a diverse, intellectually talented student body. Applicants should have medical exposure and extracurricular activities are weighted heavily. Applicants interview with students and faculty.
