The University at Buffalo, SUNY Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences was established in 1846 as the medical school of the University of Buffalo. The school was part of the original charter of the university, which was created to provide higher education opportunities for residents of western New York. Initially, it offered a two-year course in medicine that included lectures, laboratory work and clinical experience. In 1875, the school became part of the State University of New York system and changed its name to the State University College at Buffalo Medical Department. During this time, it began offering a four-year course in medicine leading to a Doctor of Medicine degree. In 1962, following a merger with the Buffalo Institute for Medical Research (BIMR), the school was renamed SUNY Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. The new name reflected BIMR’s long history as an important center for medical research and teaching in western New York. Since then, SUNY Jacobs has become one of the top medical schools in the United States and is now recognized as one of seven Centers for Excellence within SUNY’s 64 campuses. It offers students a wide range of educational opportunities including advanced degrees in medicine, biomedical sciences, public health and other health-related fields.
