Brown University Warren Alpert Medical School was founded in 1811 as the Rhode Island College of Medicine, the first medical school in Rhode Island. The school was the brainchild of a group of Providence doctors, who sought to provide a more advanced level of medical education than had been available before. The early curriculum included courses in anatomy, physiology, botany, and chemistry, as well as clinical instruction. In 1845, the school changed its name to Brown University Medical Department and became affiliated with Brown University. In 1898 it became an independent institution known as Brown University Medical School.
In 1969, the school merged with Rhode Island Hospital’s medical staff to become Brown University’s Program in Medicine (PIM). The merger strengthened the medical school’s clinical programs and allowed for greater collaboration between faculty members and students from both institutions. In 1979, PIM was renamed Brown University Warren Alpert Medical School after businessman and philanthropist Warren Alpert donated $5 million to support its ongoing development.
Today, Brown’s medical school is one of the most prestigious in the nation with a focus on interdisciplinary research and education across multiple disciplines including medicine, public health and biomedical sciences. It has also been recognized for its commitment to diversity among its faculty and student body; over half of all students come from underrepresented minority backgrounds or are first-generation college students.
