The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) New Jersey Medical School was established in 1954 as the Newark College of Medicine. It was created as a result of a merger between two existing medical schools, the Medical College of New Jersey (MCNJ) and the Seton Hall College of Medicine. The merger created a new school that was dedicated to providing its students with an education in all areas related to health care, including medicine, dentistry, public health, nursing, pharmacy, and allied health professions.
Since its inception, UMDNJ has grown substantially in size and scope. In 1965, the University opened its first hospital in Newark which has since grown into a full-fledged medical center with over 800 beds and numerous specialty units. Throughout the years UMDNJ has continued to expand its programs by adding new departments such as Biomedical Engineering and Molecular Genetics & Microbiology. Additionally, the school has also opened satellite campuses in Stratford and Piscataway that offer training for various health care professions.
In recent years UMDNJ has begun to focus on research initiatives aimed at improving patient care throughout New Jersey and beyond. The school is now home to numerous research centers such as the Institute for Health Care Research & Policy Program which focuses on improving access to quality health care for all citizens regardless of their economic situation or location. Additionally, UMDNJ also houses an active clinical trial center that studies treatments for various diseases such as cancer or heart disease.
