Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine was established in 1873, making it one of the oldest medical schools in the United States. The school was originally founded as the New England Female Medical College, and its mission was to provide education for female physicians and surgeons. In 1873, the school changed its name to Boston University School of Medicine, and it became a co-educational institution. Over time, the school grew in size and reputation and began offering more advanced degrees such as Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Doctor of Science (ScD). In 2006, the school officially changed its name to Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine in honor of Drs.
