Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine was founded in 1843 as the medical department of Western Reserve College. It was the first medical school in Ohio and one of the first in the nation. The school began with six faculty members and eleven students, all men. In 1844, the first woman graduated from the medical school. During its early years, the school made numerous contributions to medical education and practice, such as developing a curriculum based on clinical experience rather than lectures and allowing students to choose their own courses of study. Over time, CWRU SOM has continued to innovate and shape modern medicine while maintaining its commitment to excellence in teaching and research.
In 1982, CWRU SOM merged with University Hospitals Health System (now University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center), creating a unique academic health center that integrated patient care with education and research. This merger provided new opportunities for collaboration between the School of Medicine’s faculty members and those at UH Cleveland Medical Center. In recent years, CWRU SOM has expanded its educational offerings to include multiple PhD programs as well as an MD/PhD program for those interested in pursuing research careers in medicine. Additionally, CWRU SOM has established strong ties with other institutions both locally and globally through joint degree programs and exchange programs for students and faculty members alike.
