The University of Minnesota Medical School has a long and proud history. Founded in 1888, it was the first medical school in the state and one of the first public medical schools in the nation. It began as a two-year program with just seven faculty members and 16 students. In 1895, it became a four-year program and by 1913, had expanded to include departments of pathology, bacteriology, anatomy, physiology and pharmacology. The medical school was instrumental in training many of the first medical doctors in Minnesota. Throughout its history, the school has continued to expand its course offerings to include specialties such as pediatrics, psychiatry and surgery. In 1958, it began offering a six-year program that integrated clinical training with basic science instruction. Today, the University of Minnesota Medical School is nationally recognized for its strong academic programs which are designed to prepare physicians for successful practice in both primary care and specialty fields. It also offers numerous research opportunities for both faculty and students alike.

The admissions statistics of University of Minnesota Medical School show that the school is highly competitive. The most recent data from 2019 reveals that there were 6,964 applicants for the class of 2024. Out of those applicants, only 488 were accepted for a total acceptance rate of 7%. The average MCAT score for accepted students was 517 and the average GPA was 3.77.
