UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School has a long and rich history. Founded in 1961, the school was originally known as the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (CMDNJ). CMDNJ was created by an act of the New Jersey Legislature in 1960, merging the existing medical and dental schools at Rutgers University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. The merger combined two existing medical schools—the College of Physicians & Surgeons at Rutgers University, which opened its doors in 1891, and the College of Medicine & Surgery at UMDNJ, which opened in 1941. The merger also combined two dental schools—the School of Dental Medicine at Rutgers University, which opened in 1923, and the College of Dentistry at UMDNJ, which opened in 1951.
The newly merged school was renamed UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS) in 2002 after receiving a major endowment from philanthropist Robert Wood Johnson IV. RWJMS has since become one of the most prestigious medical schools in the nation.
