The University of Missouri, Kansas City School of Medicine was founded in 1971, as the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. It was created as an independent medical school within the University of Missouri system. The school was initially only open to students from the state of Missouri, and its mission was to train physicians for primary care practices in rural and underserved areas.
In the early years, the school focused on providing a rigorous curriculum and training in basic sciences and clinical medicine.
