The University of Nebraska College of Medicine was established in 1880, making it one of the oldest medical schools in the country. The school was originally founded as a two-year medical program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The first class had only six students, and the initial curriculum included anatomy, physiology, chemistry, materia medica and therapeutics. In 1882, the program was extended to four years and awarded its first degrees. In 1891, it became a full four-year medical school and was renamed to University of Nebraska College of Medicine.
In 1907, the college moved to Omaha and established a new campus at its current location in midtown Omaha. This allowed for an expansion in faculty as well as facilities. The college began offering postgraduate training opportunities for physicians in 1918 and opened its first research building in 1923. In 1930, it became an independent college within the university system and began offering graduate degrees in 1931. Throughout its history, UNMC has been committed to providing quality education to medical students from all backgrounds by introducing innovative teaching methods such as problem-based learning and simulation labs.
