University of South Carolina School of Medicine

The University of South Carolina School of Medicine has a long and distinguished history. Founded in 1824, it is the oldest medical school in the state. Originally known as the Medical College of South Carolina, it was established to provide educational opportunities for physicians from all over the state and beyond. The school quickly gained a reputation for excellence and became one of the leading medical schools in the Southeast United States. In 1877, it was renamed to its current name and moved to its current location in Columbia, South Carolina. Over the years, USC School of Medicine has continued to expand its curriculum and research capabilities to meet the changing needs of society and medicine. Today, it offers a wide range of degree programs including Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master’s Degree Programs, Certificate Programs, Specialty Programs, Residency Programs and Fellowship Programs. The Admissions Committee is composed of members of the basic science and clinical faculty of the School of Medicine and medical students. *All aspects of an application are considered. The selection criteria is weighted as one-third each for the MCAT/GPA, letters of recommendation/work/volunteer experiences, and interviews/personal attributes. Preference is given to SC residents for admissions.
