The Medical University of South Carolina College of Medicine (MUSC) began as the Medical College of South Carolina in 1824, making it the oldest medical school in the Southern United States. It was founded by Dr. Thomas Smith and other prominent physicians from Charleston who wanted to provide a better education for their students than what was available at existing schools. The college was originally located on Broad Street in downtown Charleston, but moved to its current location in 1929 after the old building became outdated. Since then, MUSC has grown from a small two-year school with just eleven faculty members to a four-year school with more than one thousand faculty members and researchers. The college has also expanded its curriculum to include programs in nursing, public health, and biomedical research. In addition, MUSC is now affiliated with six hospitals throughout the state and provides clinical services at more than 200 sites statewide. Over its nearly 200 year history, MUSC has produced thousands of graduates who have gone on to become successful professionals in their respective fields.
