University of Louisville School of Medicine

The University of Louisville School of Medicine has a long and proud history of excellence in medical education. Founded in 1837, the school was initially named Louisville Medical Institute. It was the first medical school in Kentucky and one of the earliest in the United States to offer both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in medicine. In 1846, it became part of the newly established University of Louisville. The school continued to expand over the years, eventually becoming one of the top medical schools in the country. In 1923, it was renamed to its current name, University of Louisville School of Medicine. It has since become a leader in medical research and education with an emphasis on primary care and rural health care needs. The school also offers several specialized residency programs such as orthopedic surgery, ophthalmology, obstetrics/gynecology, family medicine and pediatrics.
