According to topschoolsoflaw, Lincoln County, Washington was established in 1883 and is located in the southeastern part of the state. The county is bordered by Spokane County to the north, Grant County to the west, Adams County to the south, and Whitman County to the east. The county’s population is estimated at around 20,000 people. The county seat is Davenport and other cities include Wilbur, Creston, Harrington, and Odessa. The area was first inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Spokane Tribe and the Palouse Tribe who hunted in the area and lived off of its plentiful resources. As more settlers moved into the region during the late 1800s and early 1900s, Lincoln County grew with them. In 1883, it was officially declared a county by Washington’s legislature. Agriculture has long been an important industry for Lincoln County with wheat being one of its most important crops. In addition to wheat farming, other industries have included cattle ranching, dairy farming, fruit orchards, timber harvesting, mining operations (including coal mining), oil production (the first oil well in Washington State was drilled in Lincoln County), and manufacturing facilities that produce everything from farm equipment to furniture. Lincoln County has also been home to many notable people throughout its history including author Ernest Hemingway who wrote several novels while living in Davenport; actor Robert Redford who lived in Creston as a child; Senator Warren Magnuson who represented Washington State for over 30 years; Senator Henry M Jackson who served as Chairman of both Senate Armed Services Committee and Senate Interior Committee; astronaut Bonnie Dunbar who flew on five space shuttle missions; musician Bing Crosby whose family owned a farm near Creston; former Governor Booth Gardner; civil rights leader James Farmer Jr.; Supreme Court Justice William O Douglas; baseball player Frank Howard; basketball player John Stockton; actor Richard Beymer; singer/songwriter Carrie Newcomer; former Vice President Dick Cheney who attended high school in Davenport;and many others. Today, Lincoln County continues to be an important agricultural hub for Washington State while also supporting a variety of businesses that provide jobs for local residents. It is also home to several museums such as the Davenport Historical Museum which showcases artifacts from local history as well as several parks that offer outdoor recreation opportunities for visitors and residents alike. The Lincoln County school district is one of the largest in Washington State. It consists of 11 elementary schools, three middle schools, and three high schools. The district also serves over 2,000 students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The elementary schools are well equipped with the latest technology and resources to ensure students receive a well-rounded education. Each school has its own library, computer lab, and art room to provide students with a wide range of learning opportunities. In addition, many of the elementary schools offer programs such as music, art, drama, and physical education classes to help foster creativity and physical development in young learners. The middle schools serve grades 6-8 and provide a solid foundation for high school success. All middle schools have dedicated teachers who are committed to helping students reach their full potential while preparing them for college or career paths after graduation. Each middle school offers a variety of course offerings including mathematics, science, social studies, language arts/English literature, foreign language courses (Spanish or French), electives (choir/music theory/drama) and more. The three high schools in the district offer an array of educational opportunities for students who wish to pursue higher education or technical training after graduation. All three high schools offer Advanced Placement classes to give academically motivated students an opportunity for college credit before they even step foot on campus. Additionally, each high school provides a comprehensive range of courses including English literature/language arts; history/social studies; mathematics; science; foreign language; music theory/electives; physical education; fine arts; health sciences; business/technology courses; career & technical education programs; and more.
