Grant, the 18th President of the United States. The area was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes including the Sioux, Winnebago, and Menominee. The first settlers to arrive in Grant County were mostly German immigrants who arrived in the 1840s and 1850s. These settlers began farming and raising livestock throughout the region, which helped to lay the foundation for Grant County’s agricultural industry. Grant County, Wisconsin is served by a total of eleven public school districts. These school districts include: Boscobel, Cuba City, Fennimore, Granton, Highland, Iowa-Grant, Lancaster, Muscoda, Platteville, River Ridge and Southwestern. The Cuba City School District serves the city of Cuba City and surrounding areas in Grant County. This district offers a variety of educational opportunities including gifted/talented programs as well as an emphasis on career readiness through its Career Academy courses offered at the high school level. The Fennimore School District serves the city of Fennimore and surrounding areas in Grant County. The district includes two elementary schools (K-4 & 5-8), one middle school (6-8), and one high school (9-12). In addition to traditional academic courses offered at all grade levels, this district also offers a variety of electives including music classes at all grade levels as well as band and choir classes offered at the middle and high schools.
