On September 29, 2013 Wilson Kipsang ran the Berlin Marathon, the current world record: 2:03:23. He improved the record, Patrick Makau with 15 seconds. How to develop a world record in the marathon itself? Will it ever be run under 2 hours in the marathon? What is the limit? What are the perfect conditions for a marathon?
Development of the world
The first world record in the marathon is a marathon runner from country of origin: Greece. Spyridon Louis runs in 1896 in Athens in a time of 2:58:50. Since then, the world has been improved 38 times. Both Americans, Britons, an American, a Finn, Japanese, South Koreans, a Soviet resident Ethiopians, Australians, a Portuguese, a Brazilian, a Moroccan, and Kenyans have held world records. The first runner among the two hours and ten minutes, Aussie Derek Clayton, when he was in Fukuoka on december 3 1967 Japan set a time of 2:09:37 on the clock. 2 hours and 5 minutes barrier was broken by the first of a Kenyan Paul Tergat. On September 28, 2003, he ran in Berlin Marathon in a time of 2:04:55. Since then, the world has been increased four times and each time it was in Berlin. Haile Gebreselassie 02:04:26 put down at the end of 2007 and in 2008, he took a step further with 02:03:59. In 2011, the Kenyan Patrick Makau who ran 2:03:38 and his world record was broken on september 29, 2013 by his compatriot Wilson Kipsang who is the current world record holder with 2:03:23.
What are the limits, they have ever run under 2 hours?
Whether they ever under 2 hours is hard to say. One must then 21.10 km/t walk and two-hour long endure. When the current record Kipsang ran on average 20.52 km/h; a significant difference yet. Anyway, in 2002 the average world record was 20.15 km/t. Experts believe that the limit of two hours for the next few years still not demolished. It is true that there are currently several Kenyans and Ethiopians who have the opportunity to break the current world. And then the second hour limit again a little closer.
The fastest but not a world record: course requirements
Despite the current world record of 2:03:23, it is not the fastest time ever run. In the Boston Marathon 2011, Kenyans Moses Mosop and Geoffrey Mutai 02:03:02 and 02:03:06 respectively. Mutai time is not present in the books that a world record despite the fact that the course officially measured, it was 42 195 meters long. Boston Marathon but was called point-to-point-Marathon, meaning that the start and finish are far apart. The advantage is that when the wind is favorable to run faster than a track, which is a round. It is also true that start at a higher point can be located at the finish line and, therefore, on the whole, you go down, which is also conducive to fast times. To avoid absurd Marathon records where one of a big mountain runs down set by the IAAF requirements for a course must meet to obtain again a world record. For example, should start and stop are located near each other, and the height difference can not be too large. Most major Marathon has a start and finish in the same place. Here, so items gone.
Ideal conditions for an entry
We have already seen that a course must meet certain requirements, kursdesigners still has great influence on the end times. The ideal way is completely flat, has a fast surface and have a few laps. The tracks in Berlin, Rotterdam and Amsterdam is indeed very fast.
Another aspect that could be affected is the field. Organizations Marathon go for a record-tying called hares. They are runners who leads and set the right tempo. They catch the wind for the runner who needs the record to attack. The longer the Hare at the right pace to run, the more it favors the attacker of the record. If you are behind someone passes you catch less wind indeed. For a holiday-maker which is 10 km/h run is negligible, this difference as the best Marathon and 30 kilometers in a hurry he is at stake soon a minute faster.
Then there are the weather conditions. These are not easily influenced. For a perfect marathon-time, it should be dry. The rain made the stiffener by muscles, extra weight and energy losses in sales. Should it be solar? As long as the Sun is not bright, it’s not bad that he seems, but a bright sunlight causes overheating in the carpet. Cloudy is generally better. The ideal temperature is between 8 and 10 degrees. If it is too cold will burn extra energy to keep the body warm. Is it too hot, heat stress and dehydration causes poor performance. When it comes to wind power, of course, is simple: preferably as little wind as possible. Wind force 4 can lead to a loss minute, where one or two wind power has hardly any influence. For these reasons, organizations often there for the marathon in the morning early start. The temperature is not too high, the Sun is not too light and the wind is often milder than in the afternoon.
An often overlooked aspect for me is the pressure. Thus a is at 500 m altitude approx. two minutes slower than at sea level. The reason for this is simply that there is less oxygen in the air, and a need to breathe harder to get enough oxygen. For runners, this difference may be less aware of life, but also suffer from the reduced air pressure. But not just height determines the air pressure, also the site of high and low pressure areas. The air pressure as a day in the Netherlands 980 hPa, while the second day is 1030 hPa. This is the same difference as the 500 metres to the sea.
If we look at the current world and the circumstances in which it is running, it is not likely that the world quickly go over 2 hours. To achieve this, there will be new training methods, super food and good talent to be discovered. But once in two hours? Who knows.
The next world record attempt
The next world record attempt on Sunday 28 September in Berlin again in good conditions. Can the stars among the current record run? And who is going to happen to the world to take?
