The University of Utah School of Medicine was established in 1905 as the University of Utah Medical Department. It was the first medical school in the state and offered a two-year program of instruction in medicine. The school was initially housed within the University’s Salt Lake City campus and offered both a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine degree. In 1952, it became an independent school and changed its name to the University of Utah School of Medicine. The School has since grown to become one of the top medical schools in the nation, offering a wide variety of degree programs as well as research opportunities for students. In addition to traditional classroom instruction, students are also exposed to hands-on clinical experiences with faculty members at affiliated hospitals throughout Utah. Through its affiliations with various hospitals, clinics, research centers, and other healthcare organizations across the state, the School has become a leader in medical education and research. Over time, this has allowed for a more comprehensive approach to patient care by providing students with an understanding not only of clinical practice but also basic science principles. This is evidenced by its strong reputation among patients and healthcare professionals alike as well as its consistently high rankings on national surveys conducted by U.S News & World Report.
