The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine has a long and distinguished history. The first medical school in the state of Ohio was founded in 1819, making it one of the oldest medical schools in the nation. It was originally known as the Medical College of Ohio, and it was located in Cincinnati. The college quickly gained a reputation for excellence and innovation, becoming one of the first medical schools to offer a four-year program.
In 1846, the college was renamed to the Medical College of Cincinnati and moved to its present location on Clifton Avenue. In 1906, it merged with another local medical school, the College of Physicians & Surgeons (CPS), forming what is now called University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. During this time, several new programs were established including residency training programs for physicians and research opportunities for students. In addition to these advances, faculty members developed many innovative treatments that are still used today such as insulin therapy for diabetes and open heart surgery.
Throughout its history, UC College of Medicine has continued to grow and evolve with advancements in science and technology. In 1967, the college opened its first teaching hospital – University Hospital – which soon became a leader in patient care and research. Today UC College of Medicine is home to several nationally renowned research centers such as the Center for Clinical & Translational Science & Training (CCTST) that focus on finding new treatments for diseases like cancer and diabetes. In addition to these centers, UC also operates an extensive library system with millions of books and journals related to medicine that are available online or through its physical locations across campus.
