Uganda has very positive relations with the Czech Republic. The country is a member of the East African Community (EAC), AfCFTA (Africa Continental Free Trade Area) and is actively involved in UN peacekeeping missions. The country is trying to break out of the position of a country that exports unprocessed commodities.

According to allcountrylist, the trend is to build a manufacturing industry and then export value-added products. For this, Uganda needs to industrialize the country and especially agriculture. He also wants to strengthen agricultural self-sufficiency. Uganda has very fertile soil and has the potential to become the breadbasket of East Africa.

The good name of the Czech Republic in Uganda helps Czech exports in the long term. The main export items are agricultural technology, defense and security equipment. Czech exports to Uganda are stable and the trade balance is significantly positive for the Czech Republic. The country is interested not only in finished products, but also in the transfer of know-how.

President Yoweri Museveni (b. 1944) has been in power since 1986, his candidacy in the 2021 elections was made possible by constitutional changes that his NRM party pushed through in parliament in 2017 despite protests from the opposition and the population; until then, the age limit for presidential candidates was 75. Already in 2005, the constitutional limit on the number of mandates was removed. Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine (b. 1982), musician and opposition member of parliament, representative of the young generation strongly dissatisfied with the government (apart from the authoritarian style and militarization of the country, mainly with high unemployment), clearly became the dominant figure of the opposition in the elections. While Museveni emphasizes his achievements, the need for continuity and stability, this rhetoric has long worn off with younger voters. As a result, arguments about Museveni’s indisputable merits for Uganda are also missed. Dictators Idi Amin and Milton Obote are to voters under 35, who have never experienced a president other than Museveni, just ancient history with no relevance to solving their everyday political and economic problems. According to demographic data, a full 81% (!) of Uganda’s population is under the age of 35. In the future, we can therefore expect growing tensions between the country’s leadership and the young generation.

The emergency telephone line of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Nairobi (phone number +254 726 489 626) operates only outside the embassy’s working hours and is intended exclusively for citizens of the Czech Republic in an emergency or threat to life or health.

The ideal connection from Entebbe International Airport to the Honorary Consulate is by taxi. For safety reasons, we recommend arranging a ride at the counter of an authorized taxi service directly in the airport building (or using the Uber service) and in no case use the services of drivers waiting in front of the airport building. We fundamentally do not recommend public transport for safety and hygiene reasons. Travel time from the airport is 1 to 3 hours, depending on traffic density. The distance between the international airport and the honorary consulate is 40-50 km, depending on the chosen route. The Honorary Consulate is located in the center of Kampala.
