Moldova: entry and exit regulations

Formalities, entry requirements

On June 8, 2006, the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova adopted Law 151-XVI on the Abolition of Visa Requirements for Citizens of the Member States of the European Union, the USA, Canada, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Japan. According to paragraph 1 of the law, from January 1, 2007, citizens of these countries are allowed to enter the Republic of Moldova without a visa. According to Article 7 of the Law on Entry and Exit in the Republic of Moldova, this regulation applies to stays of up to 90 days within a period of six months from the first entry. The aforementioned citizens need a valid passport to enter the Republic of Moldova, an identity card is not sufficient for entry. The passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the end of the trip.

  • Local currencyThe import and export of local currency is permitted up to an amount equivalent to around US $ 5,000.
  • Foreign currenciesThe import of foreign currency is unlimited, but must be declared. The export is limited to the declared amount.

Importing and exporting goods

The following articles may be imported into Moldova duty-free (for people over 18 years of age): 200 cigarettes, 1 liter of wine and/or spirits and perfume for personal use. Food and medication may only be imported for personal use. There is an obligation to declare personal valuables and electronic devices. The import of weapons of any kind is prohibited. When entering the country with your own vehicle, this must be registered. It is forbidden to take petrol in canisters. The export of works of art and antiques requires a permit. The export of food beyond the travel provisions and the export of petrol in reserve canisters is not permitted.

How to get to Moldova

Plane

direct flights to Chişinău go from Frankfurt am Main and Vienna. There is also a charter flight from Germany, France, Romania, Turkey, the CIS, the Netherlands, Hungary and Israel to Moldova. An important train connection runs from Moscow via Kiev (Ukraine) to Chişinău. Also from Odessa (Ukraine), Bucharest (Romania) and Sofia (Bulgaria) trains run regularly to Moldova via Ungheni.

Car and bus

The best way to travel by car from southern Germany, Switzerland and Austria is via the Vienna-Budapest-Romania route to the border crossing at Ungheni. From northern Germany you can also travel via Krakow and then through Ukraine to Moldova.

Entry should in no way take place via the border crossings between Ukraine and the breakaway republic of Transnistria, as there is no control there by the Moldovan authorities and the stay in the country is therefore considered illegal.

There are regular bus connections between Chişinău and Bucharest and Kiev as well as to Western Europe.

Travel in the country

Rail

The country’s rail network covers over 1,145 km. There are daily train connections from Chişinău to Ocnita, Tighina and Ungheni as well as good connections to all parts of the country.

Roads

Moldova has a road network of over 13,500 km.

Ferry connections

Moldova has 424 km of navigable waterways (Dnestr and Pruth).

Buses

There are long-distance buses between most towns and cities.

Taxis

Taxis are available in front of hotels, restaurants and parking lots and can be ordered by telephone. The fare should be agreed in advance.

Rental cars

For rental cars, an international driver’s license and the international green insurance card are required.

Traffic rules

To avoid trouble with the police or even the courts, drivers should strictly adhere to the traffic regulations in force in the country. Regardless of the information given here, it is advisable to obtain more detailed information from ADAC, AvD or Moldova’s traffic clubs.

Top speeds

  • Urban: In built-up areas there is a speed limit of 60 km/h.
  • Country roads: There is a speed limit of 90 km/h on country roads.

In addition, it is of course necessary to pay attention to the current local speed limits, which are indicated by traffic signs.

Moldova: travel medicine, vaccinations and warnings

In the event of accidents, acts of violence or illness, good medical care is often life-saving, but at least it is of crucial importance for the course of the disease and the subsequent prognosis.

Infectious Diseases

The following infectious diseases can be expected in Moldova:

  • Malaria, there is no risk of malaria in the country
  • AIDS, HIV
  • Amoebic dysentery
  • Bacterial agitation
  • Lyme disease, as a result of tick bites
  • Cholera, an infection risk only exists for travelers who can come into contact with contaminated water or contaminated food
  • Intestinal infections from contaminated food or water, including amoeba, lamblia, salmonella, shigella and worm infestation, as well as all kinds of viruses and bacteria
  • Early summer meningo encephalitis (TBE), mainly as a result of tick bites
