How to get to Honduras

Honduras has four international airports.

Tegucigalpa (TGU)
San Pedro Sula (SAP)
La Ceiba (LCE)
Roatan (RTB)

There are no direct flights from Germany.

Of the European airlines, Lufthansa, Iberia, KLM and Air France, among others, fly to Honduras with stopovers, mostly in the USA. The American airlines Continental Airlines and American Airlines also offer these destinations.

Mostly Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula are approached. There are direct flights to Roatán from the USA.

Caribbean Air offers flight connections between Latin American countries and the USA to Belize City, Mayan World to Guatemala, TACA to Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and the USA.

NICA flies to Managua in Nicaragua, LACSA to San José in Costa Rica and the USA, COPA is connected via Panama and flies to the USA, Mexico and the South American countries.

Travel in the country

Air connections The national airline network is very well developed and there are numerous smaller providers in addition to the larger airlines. Railway

In Honduras there is only one railway line for passenger traffic.

The state-run Ferrocarril Nacional runs from Puerto Cortés via Baracoa (there you change to Tela) to San Pedro Sula.

Bus system

National

The bus system is well developed and very inexpensive.

There are different categories.

The express bus (Ejecutivo) is a modernly equipped coach with air conditioning and video and is the fastest option as it only stops in the big cities. It connects the cities of Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula and La Ceiba.

In addition, there are buses that connect the big cities with the neighboring villages, they are mostly discarded school buses from the USA.

Some private companies offer shuttle buses. You commute between the tourist destinations and the major airports.

International

TICA bus connects all Central American capitals. The Kings’s Quality/Pullmann line operates between San Salvador, Guatemala and Tegucigalpa.

Roads

The main roads in the country are very well developed.

The side roads, however, can be paved or simple dirt roads. The state is very different.

The Honduran Automobile Club is actually only for members, but on account it also helps visitors to the country.

Rental

cars Rental cars from the most common large agencies are available in Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, La Ceiba and Roatán. Motorcycles can be rented in Trujillo and Roatán.

Rental car prices are very high.

Ferry connections

The islands of Roatán and Utila off the Caribbean coast are connected by ferries from La Ceiba. The ferry runs once a day (in both directions). The drive from La Ceiba to Coxen Hole on Roatán takes two hours and from La Ceiba to Utila one hour.

Alternatively there is the possibility to go privately on a fishing or cargo boat. This is especially true in the regions on the Mosquito Coast.

From Puerto Cortés there is a boat every few days to Mango Creek in Belize; the journey time is about eight hours. Open canoes to Livingston and Puerto Barrios in Guatemala and ships to the Islas de Bahía run irregularly. Information can be obtained at the entrance to the port.

Traffic rules

There is right-hand traffic in Honduras. In order to avoid trouble with the police or even the courts, one should strictly adhere to the traffic regulations in force in the country. Regardless of the information provided here, it is advisable to obtain detailed information from the ADAC, the AvD, prior to departure.

Maximum speeds

In addition to the general speed limits shown, the speed limits indicated by signs must be strictly observed.

Urban: In built-up areas there is a speed limit of 50 km/h.
Country roads: There is a speed limit of 70 km/h on country roads.
Expressways: There is a speed limit of 90 km/h on some special expressways.

Blood

The building in which the Embassy of Honduras is located is a representative villa from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Cuxhavener Straße, where the embassy is located, goes off the Bachstraße, which in turn leads to the Straße des 17. Juni. Formalities, visas

German citizens need a passport that is valid for at least six months and sufficient financial means for a stay of 90 days.

It is not necessary to apply for a visa.

An extension of the stay is possible for a small fee. Taking up work is not permitted.

Foreign currencies can be imported without restriction.

Departure fee

In many countries, a fee must be paid when leaving the country. This fee is around US $ 10 at airports when leaving Honduras and around US $ 2-3 overland.

Import and export of goods The import and export of weapons, ammunition or explosives is strictly prohibited. In addition, the import and export of plants and animals protected under the Washington Species Protection Act, such as iguanas and parrots, is prohibited. The same goes for archaeological finds.

Infectious Diseases

In Honduras, the following infectious diseases, which are rarely or rarely widespread in Germany or Central and Northern Europe, are to be expected:

Malaria, with the exception of Tegucigalpa, there is a risk of malaria across the country. About 5% of the infections occur with the very dangerous malaria tropica, the rest with malaria tertiana. In areas above about 1,500 m altitude there is little or no risk of malaria infection.

Cholera, an infection risk only exists for travelers who may come into contact with polluted water or food.
Dengue fever disease

Hepatitis A and B, infection with hepatitis B, is only to be expected in people who may come into contact with blood or those who seek sexual contact.

Vaccination recommendations

When traveling to Honduras, the following vaccinations recommended:

Cholera, only among travelers who may come into contact with polluted water or food.
Diphtheria, a vaccination against diphtheria should always exist, also in the home country.
Hepatitis A and B, vaccination against hepatitis B, is only required for those who may come into contact with blood or for those who seek sexual contact.
Polio, polio, a vaccination against polio should always exist, also in the home country.
Tetanus, a vaccination against tetanus, should always exist, also in the home country.
Rabies, only in high-risk travelers who can come into contact with the vector animals.
Typhoid, but only in travelers who may come into contact with polluted water or contaminated food.

Compulsory vaccination

For all persons older than one year and coming from a yellow fever infection area designated by the WHO, there is a compulsory vaccination against an illness with yellow fever. Since the country itself is one of the yellow fever infection areas designated by the WHO, vaccination is strongly recommended.

Yellow fever vaccination for children

In most of the countries where yellow fever vaccination is mandatory, this also applies to children over 1 year of age, in some countries even from 6 months. It should be noted that

vaccination against yellow fever had a number of side effects, such as encephalitis. Around two thirds of those affected were children under 6 months. Therefore, under no circumstances should children under this age be vaccinated. But children under one year of age should also not be vaccinated if possible. If in doubt, yellow fever infection areas must then be avoided.

Any vaccination against yellow fever may only be carried out in specially authorized yellow fever vaccination centers!

Malaria prophylaxis

When traveling in the country it is advisable to undergo malaria prophylaxis. If the side effects seem questionable to you, you should at least have a “stand-by preparation” with you.

Hurricanes Multiple hurricanes can occur

during hurricane season in the winter months. These are accompanied, among other things, with torrential rainfall and landslides. Depending on the strength of the storm, streets can be undermined and ferry and flight connections can be suspended.
