Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) began in 1969 as the Texas Tech University School of Medicine with the goal of providing quality medical education to students in West Texas. The school was established with a generous financial donation from Dr. T. Boone Pickens and a commitment from the state legislature to fund the school’s operations. Since then, TTUHSC has grown to include six health science schools, including Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Allied Health Sciences, Biomedical Sciences and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. These schools offer programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels for those interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. The university also offers continuing education courses for health professionals and research opportunities for graduate students. In addition to its educational programs, TTUHSC operates several research centers including the Center for Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine and the Institute of Environmental & Human Health. The university is also home to two hospitals: University Medical Center and Covenant Children’s Hospital. TTUHSC has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools since 1976, making it one of only three public universities in Texas with such accreditation.
