According to topschoolsoflaw, Herkimer County, New York is located in the Mohawk Valley and is home to approximately 64,000 people. The county was established in 1791 and named after General Nicholas Herkimer who fought in the Battle of Oriskany during the American Revolution. The county seat is Herkimer and its largest city is Utica. The area that would later become Herkimer County was originally occupied by members of the Iroquois Confederacy (Haudenosaunee). The first European settlers began arriving in the region in the 1720s, primarily from New England and Holland. By 1790, there were over 5,000 settlers living in the area. The Erie Canal opened up a new era of economic growth for Herkimer County when it was completed in 1825. This allowed for increased commerce between upstate New York and other parts of the country which brought an influx of new residents to the area. During this time period, many small villages sprung up along the canal corridor including Little Falls, Ilion, Frankfort and Mohawk. Throughout much of its history Herkimer County has been known as a manufacturing hub due to its abundant natural resources such as water power from rivers and streams which made it ideal for powering mills and factories. In addition to being home to numerous textile mills, paper mills and tool factories, Herkimer County also became known for its production of glassware as well as other products such as shoes, furniture and firearms. In recent years Herkimer County has experienced a shift away from traditional manufacturing towards a more diversified economy with an emphasis on healthcare services, tourism and education. The county boasts several higher education institutions including SUNY Polytechnic Institute (formerly known as SUNYIT) located in Marcy; Utica College; Hamilton College; Mohawk Valley Community College; Morrisville State College; SUNY Cobleskill; Colgate University at Hamilton; Paul Smith’s College at Saranac Lake; St Lawrence University at Canton; Clarkson University at Potsdam; Nazareth College at Rochester; Alfred University at Alfred Station; Hartwick College at Oneonta; SUNY Delhi at Delhi; Le Moyne College at Syracuse; Syracuse University (Syracuse); Cazenovia College (Cazenovia); Wells College (Aurora); Ithaca College (Ithaca); Elmira College (Elmira); and Hobart and William Smith Colleges (Geneva). With this diverse range of educational opportunities, Herkimer County has become an attractive destination for students, faculty and staff from all over the world. Herkimer County, New York, is home to several school districts, all of which are committed to providing quality education to their students. The largest of these is the Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES (HFHO) district, which serves students from all four counties. This district has an enrollment of over 8,000 students and operates 18 elementary schools, five middle schools and four high schools. It also offers career and technical education programs in a variety of areas such as automotive technology, building trades and hospitality management. In addition to its traditional academic offerings, HFHO also provides special education services for those with learning disabilities or other special needs as well as alternative education programs for at-risk youth. The next largest school district in Herkimer County is the Central Valley Central School District (CVC), which serves the villages of Ilion and Mohawk as well as the townships of German Flatts and Schuyler. This district has an enrollment of around 3,000 students and operates two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. CVC offers a wide variety of courses in both traditional academic subjects such as math, science and English as well as electives in music, art and physical education. The district also provides a variety of extracurricular activities such as sports teams, clubs and student government organizations for its students to take part in. The remaining school districts in Herkimer County are much smaller than HFHO or CVC but still provide excellent educational opportunities for their students. These include the Frankfort-Schuyler Central School District (FSCSD), Little Falls City School District (LFCSD) and Dolgeville Central School District (DCSD). Each of these districts offers similar courses in academics along with extracurricular activities like sports teams or clubs for their students to participate in outside the classroom. Overall, Herkimer County is home to some excellent school districts that provide quality educational opportunities for its residents’ children. From large districts like HFHO that offer a wide variety of courses to smaller ones like DCSD that focus on more intimate learning experiences; there is something for everyone when it comes to public schooling in this area.
