According to topschoolsoflaw, Doniphan County, Kansas was founded in 1855 and is named after Alexander William Doniphan, a Missouri attorney who served in the Mexican-American War. The county was established as one of the first 33 counties of Kansas Territory and was originally home to the Missouri River Sioux tribe. In 1859, a group of settlers from Missouri arrived in Doniphan County and formed what would become the town of Troy. Throughout the Civil War, many pro-Union settlers fought in battles throughout the area. After the war ended, there was an influx of German settlers arriving in Doniphan County, which helped to grow its population significantly. Agriculture was a major industry during this time period as settlers planted crops such as wheat and corn on their farms. By 1880, Doniphan County had two thriving towns, Troy and Wathena, with a population of 3,000 people. In 1887 it built its first railroad line connecting Troy to St Joseph’s Missouri with stops at other small towns along the way. By 1910, Doniphan County had grown to over 10,000 people and became an important agricultural center for wheat production. During World War II, Doniphan County was home to an ammunition plant that supplied shells for military use overseas. After World War II ended, Doniphan County began to see more industrial development as new factories opened up throughout the region providing jobs for many locals. Today, Doniphan County is still largely rural but has seen growth in recent years due to its proximity to larger cities such as St Joseph’s and Kansas City. It remains an important agricultural area with many small family farms producing quality crops for sale across Kansas and beyond. The Doniphan County school district is composed of five public schools and one private school. The five public schools are Wathena Elementary, Troy Elementary, Highland Elementary, Doniphan West Middle School, and Doniphan West High School. All five schools are part of the unified school district of Doniphan County which is supported by local taxpayers. Wathena Elementary serves grades K-4 and has a student population of around 500 students. Troy Elementary also serves grades K-4 and has a student population of about 300 students.
