According to topschoolsoflaw, New London County, Connecticut is a county located in the southeastern corner of the state and is home to nearly 270,000 people. It was established in 1666 as one of four original counties in the newly formed Connecticut Colony. The county was named after its largest city, New London, which was founded two years earlier as a trading post by John Winthrop Jr., son of the founder of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The earliest inhabitants of New London were Native American tribes including the Mohegan and Pequot tribes. In 1637, these two tribes engaged in a bloody war known as the Pequot War which resulted in the near-total destruction of the Pequot tribe and their displacement from New London County. During colonial times, New London became an important port city with a bustling wharf and several shipyards. It was also home to many successful privateers who preyed on British shipping during both the French and Indian War (1754-1763) and American Revolution (1775-1783). In addition to maritime trade, farming was also an important industry for many residents. In 1784, New London became part of Connecticut’s first official county government when it joined with Norwich, Windham, Hartford and Tolland counties to form what is now known as modern day Connecticut. New London County also played an important role during the Industrial Revolution when it became home to several large factories that produced textiles and other goods for export. Today, New London County continues to be an important center for maritime trade as well as manufacturing and tourism. It is served by Interstates 95 & 395 which provide easy access to nearby cities like Hartford or Providence while still allowing residents to enjoy its rural charm and beautiful coastline. New London County, Connecticut is home to several school districts that provide educational opportunities to the nearly 270,000 people who live in the area. The largest of these districts is the New London Public Schools (NLPS), which serves over 8,000 students from kindergarten through 12th grade and offers a variety of programs and services to meet their needs. The district has 19 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, and 2 high schools. The NLPS offers a range of educational options for students including traditional public schools as well as magnet schools and charter schools.
