Situated at the crossroads of Europe and the Middle East on the Balkan Peninsula, Bulgaria boasts a rich history shaped by Thracian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman influences. The Thracian civilization, predating the Roman era, laid the foundations for the region’s cultural heritage. Becoming part of the Roman Empire in 45 AD, Bulgaria later experienced the Byzantine era, contributing to its Eastern Orthodox Christian traditions. In the 7th century, the First Bulgarian Empire emerged under Khan Asparuh, marking a period of cultural and political expansion. Byzantine rule persisted intermittently, followed by Ottoman domination from the late 14th century until the late 19th century. The struggle for independence led to the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 and the establishment of the modern state of Bulgaria. The early 20th century saw political turbulence, including participation in both World Wars. During the Cold War, Bulgaria aligned with the Eastern Bloc, and it was not until the 1990s that the country transitioned to democracy. Today, Bulgaria is a parliamentary republic and a member of the European Union. Sofia, the capital, reflects its diverse history with Roman ruins, Ottoman mosques, and Orthodox Christian churches. While Bulgaria has made progress in economic development and political stability, challenges such as corruption, demographic issues, and the need for structural reforms persist. The country continues to embrace its rich cultural heritage, including traditional folk music and dance, alongside aspirations for increased prosperity and integration within the European framework.
