Situated at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Armenia is a landlocked country in the South Caucasus with a history dating back millennia. The Armenian Highland, one of the oldest inhabited regions, was home to the Urartian Kingdom in the 9th-6th centuries BCE. Armenians adopted Christianity as a state religion in 301 CE, making Armenia the first nation to do so. Throughout its history, Armenia faced invasions and occupations by various powers, including the Byzantines, Persians, Arabs, Mongols, and Ottomans. The Armenian Genocide during World War I resulted in the mass deportation and killing of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire, leaving a profound impact on the nation. In 1918, Armenia declared independence, but it was short-lived as Soviet rule was established in 1920. After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, Armenia regained its independence. The post-Soviet era brought challenges, including a devastating earthquake in 1988 and a conflict with Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, resulting in a war in the early 1990s. Despite gaining de facto control over Nagorno-Karabakh, Armenia faced economic difficulties, emigration, and strained relations with Azerbaijan and Turkey. Recent years have seen political changes, including the Velvet Revolution in 2018, which brought a new government led by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Armenia continues to grapple with the aftermath of the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, seeking to rebuild and address the complex geopolitical dynamics in the region while preserving its rich cultural heritage and fostering economic development.
