Stony Brook University Renaissance School of Medicine was established in 1971 as the first medical school on Long Island. It was founded by a group of visionary physicians, educators, and public health officials who wanted to create an integrated academic medical center dedicated to the advancement of health care and research. The school was initially housed at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, but in 1975 it moved to Stony Brook University Hospital. The school has since grown immensely, with over 500 faculty members, more than 1,000 clinical residents and fellows, and more than 2,300 medical students.
