Stanford University School of Medicine was founded in 1858 as the Medical Department of the University of the Pacific. It was the first medical school on the West Coast and served as a model for other medical schools in California. The original curriculum consisted of two years of lectures and clinical instruction, and students graduated with a Doctor of Medicine degree. In 1908, Stanford University acquired the Medical Department and established it as an independent school within Stanford University. In 1932, Stanford established its hospital, which became known as Stanford Hospital & Clinics in 1959. Stanford Medical School has since become one of the most prestigious medical schools in the world, consistently ranked among the top five in U.S. News & World Report’s annual survey of “best medical schools” for research. The school has grown to include more than 2,000 faculty members and over 10,000 students and alumni throughout its history. Stanford University School of Medicine is one of the most prestigious medical schools in the country. Admissions to the school are highly competitive and selective, with only a small percentage of applicants accepted each year.
