Fiji: Various travel information

How do you get to the Fiji Islands?

Fiji has two international airports, Nadi and Nausori, near the capital, Suva. Compared to other islands in the Pacific, Fiji is easy to get to as many international airlines make a stopover here, not least because Nadi is one of the main hubs in the South Pacific. The islands are served by the following airlines: Aircalin, Air Fiji, Air Nauru, Air New Zealand, Air Pacific, Air Vanuatu, Freedom Air, Korean Air, Pacific Blue, Polynesian Airlines, Qantas and Solomon Airlines.

Entry and exit regulations

Upon entry, a passport that is still valid for six months from the date of entry and a return or onward ticket must be presented. A visa will then be issued for a stay of up to four months upon arrival. An exit fee will be charged. This does not apply to children under 12 years of age.

Travel to the islands

There is left-hand traffic in the Fiji Islands .

Bus

Fiji is good and inexpensive to travel to by bus.

Taxi

Taxis are plentiful and not expensive as the population depends on them.

Railway

There is a 600 km long narrow-gauge railway. The only passenger train on Vitu Levu Island runs between the Coral Coast and Natadola Beach.

Roads

Fiji has a total of 3,440 km of country roads, 1,690 km of which are tarred and 1,750 km of which are gravel.

Car

hire Car hire is expensive in Fiji. You must have a driver's license in English or an international driver's license.

Ferry connections, waterways

Most of the connections between the islands run via Suva. Port cities are Lambasa, Lautoka, Levuka, Malau, Savusavu, Suva and Vuda.

There is no limit for the import of foreign currency. However, only foreign currencies up to the imported amount may be exported again.

Credit Cards

All major credit cards are accepted in the larger hotels and shops, at car rental companies and restaurants.

Shop

Cheap or country-specific goods, souvenirs

Black pearls can be bought cheaply in Savusavu on Vanua Levu, which are otherwise only found in Tahiti or the Cook Islands. There are also bark fibers and kava bowls to buy.

Fiji Islands: Travel Medicine, Vaccinations, and Warnings

Infectious diseases

  • Malaria: There is no risk of malaria infection on the islands.
  • Cholera - only for travelers who may come into contact with polluted water or food.
  • Dengue fever - but the risk of infection is relatively low.
  • Intestinal infections from contaminated food or water, including amoeba, lamblia, salmonella, shigella, worm infestation and all kinds of viruses and bacteria.
  • Filariasis
  • Polio, polio - the risk of infection is relatively low.
  • Typhoid - only for travelers who may come into contact with polluted water or contaminated food.
