The only park in New York, literally torn off the ground, “High Line” stretches for almost 2.5 km in western Manhattanand is located on the track space of the elevated railway, at a height of about 10 m. The High Line looks like a real celebration of nature in the futuristic landscape of soulless Manhattan: among the highways and skyscrapers of the business district, an emerald strip of lush vegetation pleases the eye, on the bosom of which a winding promenade, comfortable benches, sun loungers and picnic tables are arranged. A bit of history
The “High Line” of New York’s urban transportation system opened in 1934, linking Manhattan’s two largest industrial districts, 34th Street, to the St. John’s Park terminal in New York Harbor. However, with the gradual development of road transport, the railway became less and less used. The last train, carrying what the chronicles mention three carloads of frozen turkey, passed through the High Line in 1980. Building owners in Manhattan called for the demolition of the line, but local activist and railroad fanatic Peter Oblets blocked the procedure in court. In 1999, the Society of Friends of the High Line was formed, which ordered in the 2000s. reconstruction of the site and its transformation into a public recreational area. The best landscape design bureaus take part in the gardening of the future park. In 2006, the High Line opens to visitors, and over the next 8 years, 4 more sections of railway tracks are being consistently improved here. Today, the park’s promenade is 2.33 km long and is visited by more than 5 million people a year.

High Line Park is a wonderful oasis in the heart of western Manhattan, an ideal place for a relaxing holiday in the truest sense of the word “above” the bustle of the world. Former railway tracks are blocked by comfortable wooden sidewalks, on both sides of which there are lush greenery of well-groomed flower beds and thickets of deciduous trees, amazing for such a “torn off” place. Entrance with pets and bicycles to the park is prohibited, so it is always calm here – of course, as far as the bustle of Manhattan boiling under your feet allows.
On the two-kilometer promenade of the park, there are a lot of benches, tables with chairs and sun loungers. In picturesque places, small branches are arranged – viewing platforms from where you can admire the panorama of Manhattan. There are also 2 restaurants and several shops for visitors.
The High Line is also a popular art platform. It organizes classes in tai chi, yoga and meditation, art performances and master classes for children, lectures on culture and art… – in a word, it never gets boring in the park!

New Yorkers love their city, but are not averse to breaking out of its stone embraces for a day or two somewhere in the bosom of nature, if only not too far from home. These conditions ideally meet the Rockaway Peninsula in the north of Queens, which separates Jamaica Bay from the ocean. Along the entire coast stretches the wide sandy beach of Rockaway Beach, which has recently become a favorite vacation spot for New Yorkers. The length of the coastline is 12 km. The peninsula is built up mainly with one-story summer houses. Between them and the sand stretches the boardwalk, a traditional wooden promenade for American beaches. On the sand there are playgrounds with slides and climbing frames, volleyball fields, observation towers for rescuers. Joggers run along the boardwalk, pensioners rest on the benches, admiring the majestic panorama of the ocean.
Surfing on Rockaway Beach
The ocean surf can get in the way of casual swimmers, but it’s a great opportunity to learn how to surf. And during the hurricane season, from September to November, the waves are serious enough for experienced athletes. Having trained here, it is no longer a shame to go on vacation to Hawaii. There are several surf schools, shops for boards and special clothing, and rental shops on the beach.
Cafes and bars
Numerous establishments line the boardwalk on the sand, serving both traditional burgers and offbeat fast food, such as Spanish sangria tacos at Tacoway Beach Bar or French salads and lemon chicken at Cuisine by Claudette.
The Riis Park Beach Bazaar restaurant not only serves delicious food, but also organizes concerts of local rock bands, karaoke parties and beauty contests. Live music plays throughout the summer at Rippers, Low Tide and Caracas open-air cafés, weather permitting.
